Norma Jean (Nee: Gahm) Carson

September 22, 1928 - September 1, 2024

Portsmouth (Hillview) Resident

FC Daehler Mortuary

Norma Jean (Nee: Gahm) Carson passed peacefully September 1, 2024, at the Hillview Retirement Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

The daughter of Denver and Nelle Gahm, Norma was born September 22, 1928 and raised in Sciotoville, Ohio. A 1946 graduate of then Sciotoville High School, she received her Bachelor of Education degree from Ohio University in 1950. Norma taught for 25 years in the Portsmouth City School district, most of that time teaching Second Grade at Lincoln Elementary School. Countless students benefited from her patient and effective teaching style. She was particularly proud of her work teaching cursive writing to her students; and in later years would lament that lost art.

Norma was a long-time active member of the Cornerstone United Methodist Church (formerly Wesley UMC, Trinity UMC). She would rarely miss Sunday worship services, until health issues prevented her attendance; and insured that her children actively participated in all aspects of the church.

She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma honor society for women educators and regularly attended meetings and activities. She was also a supportive member of the Scioto Memorial Hospital auxiliary, diligently working for their annual flower sale. Among her numerous hobbies and activities, Norma was an avid card player and was a member of the same Bridge Club for more than 40 years.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Marge (Nee Gahm) Guisinger and her husband of 46 years Harold Eugene Carson.

She is survived by her daughter Cheri (Russ) Wells of North Royalton, Ohio; her son Kent (Kate) Carson of Johnstown, Ohio; Grandchildren: Joshua (Jessica) Wells, Jarod (Lindsey) Wells, Bennett Carson and Alexandra Carson; along with four great grandchildren McKenna and Maebry Wells, Carter and Nolan Wells, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 8, 2024, at 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Service will be Monday, September 9, 2024, at 11:00 AM, all at FC Daehler Mortuary, 915 Ninth Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662. Reverend Ralph Clay Officiating.

Interment in Memorial Burial Park, Wheelersburg, Ohio.
