Gerald L. "Barney" Barnhart, 77 years old, Portsmouth resident, passed away October 22, 2024. It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved Barney, a dedicated husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and loyal friend. Born in Ashland, KY, Barney was a proud graduate of the Ironton High School Class of 1967 and went on to excel in his career as a Union Millwright Local 1519 and 1031, a skill he honed with precision and dedication.
Barney's zest for life and infectious humor endeared him to all who knew him. His love for his family was immeasurable, and his presence will be deeply missed by his wife of thirty-three years, Jeannie Barnhart of Portsmouth, his children: Helene (Don) Barnhart Maerker of Ironton, James Barnhart of Land O'Lakes, FL, and stepson Shane Timberlake of Defiance, his grandchildren: Kinsey (Tom), Kiernyn, Kian, Kierce, Elle and Addyson, his mother in law, Arlene Newman of Portsmouth, and his three sister in laws: Karen (Sam) McGraw of South Portsmouth, KY, Tamie (The Late Bob) Thornberry of Wilmington, and Michelle (John) Isaac of Portsmouth, multiple nieces, newphews, cousins and countless friends, especially his lifelong friend Gary (Sue) Runyon of Ironton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Ural and Helen (Nee McKenzie) Barnhart and his father in law, William "Bill" Newman.
A proud member of the Eagles New Boston #2271, Barney also found joy in his passions for bowling, camping, traveling, and cheering on his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes. A true music connoisseur, Barney's eclectic taste spanned all genres, reflecting his vibrant spirit and love for life.
Barney's remarkable attention to detail and commitment to doing things right shone through in all aspects of his life. His quick wit, imaginative storytelling, and penchant for pranks brought laughter to all those around him. He shared a special bond with his feline companions, his beloved Rizzo, Katie Cat, Fluffy, and many more.
